SUB-PROJECTS

SP 1.1

Titel:

Feed Safety

Scientific Co-ordinator:

Prof. Dr. Hans Schenkel

Institutions involved:

Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaftliche Chemie (State laboratory of agricultural chemistry), Universität Hohenheim

Staff:

M. Sc. agr. Heidrun Parussel

Aim of the Sub-project:

The IT Food Trace project aims to develop a system of reliable traceability in the whole food chain and to guarantee food safety. The target level of food safety must be adequate for industry, administration and management systems, but also understandable for and transparent to the consumer.
The feed manufacturers industry is an important supplier for animal production. Together with feed produced on farm, this sector is the first step of the whole food chain. A great deal of responsibility rests on this sector because of the possible entry of undesirable substances into the food chain at this stage of production For example the scandals in which dioxin and nitrofen were found in feed stuffs will be discussed.

Research:

First, the relationship between different feed safety and quality management systems will be established. Animal feed in mixtures, pre-mixtures and single components are produced with different quality management systems, such as QS (Germany, compound feed and single feed), GMP+ (Netherlands, compound feed and single feed) and IFIS (International Alliance for Feedsafety, feed ingredients). A structure will be developed from the standards. Partners of the project will provide proposals. Problems of special companies will be included.
In the second part of the project, undesirable substances in feed will be analysed: For example, molds difficult to find in large lots of cereals because their growth is nest-like and because they are not evenly distributed throughout the cereals.
Other undesirable substances, such as lead and cadmium, will also be analysed as will their sources of entry into the animal feed.
